High-Carb Vegan London

I was in London for the weekend visiting my sister, she is also vegan. Its great because she has already done the research into great vegan friendly eat outs, and she knows that I like to eat a lot of carbs. I took some photos of what we had to eat when we went out for food.

On the Friday night, we ate a takeaway from 'Rasa' in Stoke-Newington. I had two portions of rice with a lentil curry. The curry was a bit on the oily side (even though I asked for low oil), so I only had about half of the portion they gave me. Needless to say I had both portions of rice.
Stoke-Newington is brimming with high quality fruits and vegetable stores and vegan friendly restaurants, definitely worth checking out if your a vegan looking for somewhere good to live in London

We were in Waterloo on Saturday morning, and on the way back my sister took me to a famous vegetarian and vegan restaurant called 'Mildreds' in Soho. It was absolutely rammed in there. For a starter we shared these dumplings, they were finger-licking good. I think they were called gyoaza dumplings (feel free to correct me if I didn't spell that correctly)

My sister had this salad with a side of sweet potato fries. I polished this off as my sister couldn't finish it (it was pretty large). It was very nutritious and from what I could taste consisted of mainly carrot, celeriac, beetroot, onion and pumpkin seeds, with herb garnishes and a tangy lemon based dressing.

I had a vegan bean burrito with a salsa, tomato chilli sauce and an extra portion of rice. It tasted great, however the fat content in the burrito was probably higher than I wanted because of the re-fried beans in there.

The vegetable salsa was incredible when mixed with the rice, in retrospect I would have just ordered the salsa with a couple of portion of rice.

On the Sunday we went to 'The Black Cat' vegan restaurant just off Hackney Downs Park for brunch. Here I had two portions of this salad, containing beans, spinach, cucumber, tomatoes, kale and pickled cabbage. This was really tasty and pretty healthy. I couldn't taste any extra oil which was fantastic. Parkour extraordinaire and high-carb vegan advocate Tim Shieff was enjoying a post-workout meal in there at the same time, which was pretty cool as he was one of the reasons I considered becoming vegan.

I do not eat out usually, but this weekend I wanted to trial what London had to offer. I am pretty happy with my choices of food, and think that I kept it relatively healthy bar the exception of the curry sauce on friday night and the contents of the bean burrito. I did however keep well hydrated throughout the weekend, I ran over 40 kilometres over the two days and did a lot of touring around London with my sister and most of all I spent plenty of time catching up with her.

All in all the weekend was a huge success in terms of what I wanted to get out of it. It really shows how much you can get done a high-carb vegan diet.
