Breakfast Option No.1- Puffed Rice

The first 'Tasty High-Carb Vegan breakfast option' I am going to review is Puffed Brown Rice

In a previous blog I declared my love for this simple, nutritious and delicious high-carb option. Puffed rice is exactly what it says on the tin, its like a healthy 'rice crispie'. It has extremely low fat and salt levels so you are safe to eat as much as you desire.

I recommend doubling up on the rice vibe and serving it with half rice milk and half water, this way you can have a nice creamy taste. In the picture here I had dates, banana and strawberries with my puffed rice. I recommend you trial different fruits to see which best tickles your fancy. My favorite fruit with this is banana as they go great with the rice milk, giving you that classic banana and custard taste. You really have got a whole host of different fruits that work with this. Puffed rice is almost like a breakfast version of a pizza base.

This is a picture of the nutritional info, unless you are allergic to rice (which I am not sure you can be??) then there is nothing in puffed rice to be afraid of. Per 100 gram portion, there are 2 grams of fat, 7 grams of protein, a trace of salt and 81 grams of carbohydrate. This is perfect for those interested in an 80/10/10 lifestyle.

Cons

Cost
A box of 225g of puffed rice costs between £2.00-2.50, and I find that in one sitting I will go through a full box. I would be surprised if anybody did eat more than me though. One box will serve around 6 medium or 4 large bowls. The puffed rice alone would cost me about £15 per week. Plus the milk and fruit you are looking at spending £20 a week.

Hard to find
Because these are a 'specialist' cereal, they can be harder to locate in the shop, if they are not on the cereal aisle then your best bet is on the gluten free aisle. I have been known to eat through the entirety of my local express supermarkets stock. Below are 2 examples you should look out for, one is from 'Rude Health' and the other from 'Natures Store'. I found no difference in taste between the two, however I preferred the 'Rude Health' box because I could preserve the cereal for longer.
Final thoughts?
I recommend trying puffed rice for breakfast, as it is are super tasty, really nutritious and very satiating. After having them for breakfast I feel satisfied till lunch time, although I did have a full box!
