I eat muesli of the 'Dorset Cereal Fruit Muesli' Variety, as it offers a cracking taste sensation with dried papaya, pineapple and sultana. It boasts a claim of being 30% fruit which is great, however it is dried fruit, so make sure you smash the water in with it. It also contains barley flakes both toasted and malted, and wheat flakes.
This box of 825g cost me £2.00 which I think is good value for what you get. I will usually eat about 400g for my breakfast, meaning I can get 2 breakfasts per box.
Once I had my breakfast I didn't feel hungry until at least mid day. This is not surprising considering the amount of calories I ate, but it didn't feel to heavy on my stomach and I didn't feel distracted as the fruity muesli really satisfied my carbohydrate cravings. This is a major plus that I find other high-carb options do not possess. I think this could be due to the mix of complex and simple carbohydrate in the muesli
With a good 68 grams of carbohydrate per 100g, this is a breakfast cereal punched with energy. Only 2.4g of fat and a trace of salt, it is once again a high-carbers dream. The protein and fibre amounts in this cereal are also good.
Cons
I find that the muesli doesn't digest as well as other breakfast cereals, I think it could be due to the barley and wheat flakes.
Muesli does contain gluten! I do try and avoid gluten, although I don't mind having it once in a while, but I know some of you will be gluten intolerant. Muesli can also contain nuts, the brand I bought does not, but make sure you read the label before eating
Make your own muesli
If you are gluten intolerant or you just fancy being creative you can always make your own muesli. All you need is a selection of dried fruit and a variety of cereal flakes such as oat, bran, wheat or barley. It would be super simple to make and then you can control exactly what goes in to it. It would most probably be cheaper depending on the dried fruit you use.
Muesli Video idea..
I find muesli to be a great way to start the day. It fuels you for a long time, it has a high percentage of fruit, a good amount of fibre and very quick to make. The value is good so definitely worth a try!
